Grrrrr....

So, Linux is... kind of annoying. More truthfully, plug-ins are annoying. For instance, .mp3 I can play, but as I understand it, I can't play .mp4. Why? MPEG stands for Moving Picture Experts Group, a group the wrote the compression method to make movies movable. They expect to be paid for their efforts. So, I can pay hundreds for Windows, or 28 Euros for a bunch.

Plus, I still nowhere near installing to the SATA harddrive. Or having persistant changes. This is annoying.

Voila!

-Blogging from Archos-

Booted Linux this morning! Fedora 9.
Here's how I got it to work on my Vostro 200:

First, I went to pendrivelinux.com, navigated to a list of USB bootable Linux.
Skipped right threw the major ones, breezed down to "Fedora LiveUSB".
~Honesty time: Spent all night trying the others~
Nice little program that takes your formatted USB drive and builds a LiveCD on it that can boot from the USB.

This was particularly nice for me, since I had a 2 Gb USB drive without a case that I've just inherited (complicated).

I let the program do it's thing, turned off my PC, adjusted BIOS to boot from removable drive, and...

Nothing. Nada. Zilch.

More specifically,
/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off
after a little google and creative thought, I removed everything I could from my PC; not much. the CD drive, the card reader, and the hard drive.

Now at this point I had little hope, but I turned it on, and...

OMG I HAS LINUX!!!!! Peanut Butter Jelly Time! Peanut Butter Jelly Time!

apparently, the distrobutions I had been trying lacked the drivers for SATA stuff.
EDIT: I more inclined it was the proprietary card reader that it couldn't handle

Still figuring just how much I can put back, and loving my new Linux.

Score?

Turns out that VoIP Buster program was the same as all the others. No luck. I woke up late today, my mom left before I could get a ride to school. When I did wake, I tried calling from the comp, no luck.

In other news, I managed to get in touch with Grandma, got a ride to school, did a little volunteering and scored myself a 24-pin power supply for the summer. Hooked it up to the nice board, powered on, got some beeps, and it self-terminated. Didn't expect much more from Power Supply+Motherboard. Still looking for a Linux OS for it to run.

Owwww....

Pain, seeping from my head and dripping on the floor.

I don't know why but I have one the worst headaches ever. When I try to figure out why, the feeling just intensifies to the point where it's dangerous to keep figuring.

I suppose going to bed at 2 in the morning didn't help, but I have to get in; I NEED to complete a project.

Anything, any price, just to get my foot in the door. Here's a list of what I'm trying to do and how it's turned out so far:

-Boot linux from a downloaded LiveCD or Flash Drive on my Vostro 200 desktop
I've downloaded several iterations of Linux, (Kubuntu, DSL, PenDriveLinux) from their respective websites (kubuntu.org, etc) in their .ISO format ( a compressed format, like .zip or .rar you can burn onto a disk and boot from) and they've all failed me. I still haven't seen a feckin' Linux desktop. The error code is always the same; something about job control turned off. I looked around, apparently it's tricky for Vostros, and I have no idea what the solutions are talking about.

-Get free VoIP, PC-to-Phone
In my quest for free stuff, I've heard thatyou can call people from your comp for free. I think I found something, VoIP Buster, but I haven't done too much testing of it. I think it worked though, I called my mom for a few seconds on our home phone.

-Build a Fecking* computer already
*nope, not an OS or a brand, just a modiified cuss word
I had to go to the dump recently, and found out tat it's my number one resource for free comp stuffone resource for free computer stuff. They section of elecrtonmics so its not hard to reach them. I picked up an old motherboard (Intel GA586VX REV 3.55) with a key based power supply (that is to say, a power supply, with a key, and a lock) and as I left I realized I didn't have the key... I don't think I'll actually use it for more than modern art and a learning experience. I also managed to mooch an Intel D915GEV/D915PCY/D915GRF or E210882 (I'm not sure which is a more propper name), (which is NICE), from my teacher, who saved it from the trash. It's amazing what my school will toss. So now I still don't have a right size power supply, or a SATA drive (newer Hard Drive), or memory to make it work.

-Hack into my Archos 605 Wi-Fi
I got this sweet gadget for less than $200 off amazon, and downloaded the newest firmware immediately. Then I found out I coul use Linux on it (Qtopia, to be precise) and run some sweet software, like a VNC program (allows you to control a comp from far away, only if both have it... I think). The bad news ist, the hack only works on old firmware, for now. Can't do much about it, but I want it, SO bad.

-Get a girlfriend
Okay, it's not strictly related to my desire to be better with computers, but a girlfriend would definately help the mental part of all this. Maybe add some stability in my life.

Welcome to the Jungle...

I think I just might die. This world of Computers, Signals, and Hacking is driving me up the wall. I don't know what the hell is going on half the time, and the other half, my projects fail. Misreabley. Almost as much as my spelling.

The point of this blog is to organize my thoughts, ideas, aspirations and what not; to journal my life in hopes to organize. I feel as though I've bitten off more than I can chew by just being alive, and hopefully writing and referring to this blog will help me swallow.
